IS YOUR HOUSEWORK KILLING YOUR BACK?
Here are 3 tips that can make your housework "spine friendly".
Repetitive movements like doing the dishes, vacuuming, laundry and even just picking up your child can be a real pain in the neck and back, leading to chronic pain.
Although you've heard it over and over, bending from the knees saves your back! When you pick something up from the ground, you have two choices, - you can either bend over from your lower back or you can bend from your knees. Do yourself and your body a favor by bending from your knees.
Once you pick up the item, be sure to hold it as close to your body as possible as you straighten up. This will protect your lower back and if really works! If you need proof, hold a gallon of your favorite beverage close to your body. Do you feel any tension in your lower back? Now hold that gallon container at arm's length. Feel the difference in your lower back?
If your back gets sore from doing too much, apply ice. If you don't have any ice, a bag of frozen veggies will do the trick. Apply the ice for 10 to 20 minutes then take it off for 10 to 20 minutes. Repeat as often as necessary for 24 to 72 hours.
