MASSAGE - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW! Massage
isn't just an indulgence. It's been proven to reduce stress, relieve
the pain of everyday wear and tear and boost immunity. Just 30 minutes
on the massage table or even 10 minutes having a chair massage can go a
long way toward working out your kinks. However you have to have your
needs met and here are some tips on how to get your money's worth. FIND THE RIGHT CERTIFIED MASSAGE THERAPIST As
you would with an MD, you want to select a certified massage therapist
who will meet your specific needs whether it be to relieve aches from a
long run or to relieve a stiff neck. If you are looking simply to
relax, a certification in Swedish massage would fit the bill. Shiatsu
or acupressure feature more targeted pressure in specific areas. SPEAK UP! Before
the massage begins, talk to the therapist about any areas of your body
that feel tight, painful, sensitive or tender - perhaps an achy spot in
your neck or shoulders. Most massages are not painful, though moderate
pressure is sometimes necessary to provide optimal benefits and may
feel a little uncomfortable, especially if you are new to massage. If
you find the pressure to be too intense for you, speak up. You can say
"that really hurts - can you try something different or maybe come back
to this area?" Your therapist should welcome and even ask for your
input.
YOU CAN PICK YOUR OWN PRODUCTS! If you have
sensitive skin, a sensitive nose or a skin condition like psoriasis or
eczema, it is acceptable to bring your own lotion or oil. You can also
ask the therapist to show you her product and discuss the options -
(fragrance free?) Different lotions are available for different types
of massage. WHEN YOU SHOULD RESCHEDULE! If you feel a
cold or a migraine coming up, postpone your massage. Massage will
stimulate your circulation, and could leave you feeling worse. If you
find it difficult to breathe when lying face down on the massage table,
or are feeling a little stuffy, ask to lie on your side. Most
techniques can be performed this way and she can always work on your
upper back, neck or shoulders while you are sitting up.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE YOUR PERIOD! There
is no medical reason to avoid having a massage if you are having your
period. Sometimes it can ease PMS symptoms like cramps and backache.
However, if you are worried about heavy bleeding, just wait a few days.
