PROTECT YOUR HEALTH AND HELP THE PLANET!
Small changes can make a big difference, not only for your health but for the planet and may even save you some money along the way.
GO EASY ON THE BEEF: Try a tuna burger or a salmon burger instead of red meat. The fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids which is not only good for your heart but can help prevent dry skin too. Eat fish 2 times a week. Making this small switch is good for the planet as well. Red meat production is responsible for about two and a half times more greenhouse gas emissions than chicken or fish.
TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS: Replace your shower head with a new low-flow or water-saving model that you can pick up at your home improvement store. They are easily to install. Look for a flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute or less. You can also put a waterproof timer set for 5 minutes in the shower. Hot water strips skin of its natural oils, so spending less time showering can result in better hydrated skin.
OPEN YOUR WINDOWS: Indoor air can be up to three times more polluted than the air outdoors, so go fresh the natural way by opening your windows. If you enjoy a light scent, place orange peel mixed with sage in small bowls throughout your home. Studies by the Natural Resources Defense Council tested 14 air fresheners and found 12 of them contained phthalates, chemicals linked to birth defects, hormone abnormalities and reproductive problems. Even the products that are billed as "all natural" or "unscented" were not chemical free.
SKIP THE DRY CLEANERS: Buy fewer clothes that have to be dry cleaned only. If you must use the dry cleaners, look for a dry cleaner that wet-cleans, using non-hazardous solutions and special equipment. In some cases the chemicals used in dry cleaning have been linked with dizziness, fatigue, skin irritation, nausea and headaches.
BUY ORGANIC COFFEES: Look for "shade grown" ( process preserves more nutrients) and "fair trade" coffees (farmers who grow these coffees are paid a fair price and do not look for growing shortcuts) Enjoy a healthier cup of coffee.
FORGET LIQUID SOAP: Use the bar soaps. Many liquid soaps, although convenient, contain agents toxic to wildlife. You can easily use too much of the liquid soap and dry out your skin, making it susceptible to germs. As well, antibacterial soaps don't always deliver the germ killing benefits they promise.
TOSS THAT FLEA COLLAR: De-flea your pet by bathing your pet. Wash the bedding in hot water once a week too. The pesticides are designed to obstruct the nervous systems of bugs but over time can also interfere with human hormones. Pesticides used in flea collars can contain toxic chemicals, including possible carcinogens which can contaminate water.
PUT YOUR COMPUTER TO SLEEP AFTER 5 MINUTES OF INACTIVITY: Unnecessary electricity can be consumed by animated screen savers. This earth friendly gesture can have a positive affect on your mental health.
